The transgender community in Tamil Nadu has requested Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay to issue an official Government Order (GO) to ensure equal welfare rights for transgender people across the state. Their main demand is to include all transgender individuals in the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai scheme and provide them with the right to travel free on state-run buses.
Activists representing more than 22,000 transgender people are now approaching the newly formed TVK government with these demands. They are urging the government to make the welfare scheme fully inclusive and ensure that transgender people receive the same benefits given to women under the scheme. Community members believe this step would improve financial security and help them live with greater dignity and security.
The demand comes after several transgender individuals reportedly faced difficulties during the previous DMK government while trying to apply for the monthly ₹1,000 financial assistance under the women’s welfare scheme. Many people claimed they were excluded due to documentation issues and lack of proper recognition in the system.
At present, the TVK government is reviewing the welfare scheme and considering changes to improve its reach. Reports suggest that the government may gradually increase the financial assistance amount and expand support for vulnerable groups in society.
Members of the transgender community say that welfare schemes should not exclude anyone based on gender identity. They believe equal access to financial support and free public transport would help many transgender individuals who continue to face social and economic challenges in daily life.
The issue has also sparked wider discussions about equality, inclusion, and the importance of providing fair opportunities for all sections of society in Tamil Nadu.
